Divergent by: Veronica Roth

My first book I read this summer was Divergent. I choose this  book because at the time, it seemed like the best choice and I wanted to know why the title was Divergent and what it had to do with the story.  I started reading it and learned about how the people in the story live. They have different factions (groups) of different kinds of people. I soon read about the protagonist in the story, which is Beatrice. She and her whole family is Abnegation. The Abnegation faction is all about selflessness, you always have to give up everything that you do for one another. You shouldn't show any personality, they even make everybody wear only gray. I couldn't live without plenty of colors for me to wear, it would be dreadfully hard to keep all of my personality inside of me and never let it show.

Beatrice had to do a simulation, which is a process in which she has to figure out which faction is best for her. She can't tell anyone about what happens in the simulation. But, what does happen isn't normal, she is divergent, which means that she could belong to any of three factions. Being divergent is rare and not a good thing though nobody knows why. I really wanted to know what she was going to choose, the author didn't make it clear to the reader about what she would choose, which I liked. The choice wasn't in the least bit predictable. She choose dauntless, which was a faction that was all about being fearless. I mean really? she went from a faction about being like a perfect angel child to a faction that liked to jump on trains! It sounded a little crazy to me, so I had to keep reading about it to see what would happen.

I enjoyed how the author hooked you at the end of every chapter, she made you want to keep reading the book and move on. Sometimes I just had to stop and think, "Now what would I do in a situation like this? Would I stand strong and be fearless, or would I run and hide my cowardly self?" The answer was different in ever situation and I surprised myself sometimes. I enjoyed the book and am glad I read it. I like reading books that have a series because I like to know all about the characters and what they are like. I am also very excited for the movie that is coming out in March of 2014.

The story reminded me of the popular book, The Hunger Games. In the Hunger Games, they have different districts of people. In Divergent, they have different factions of people. In The Hunger Games, they have districts 1-12. In Divergent they have the factions Erudite (learning), Amity (peace), Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (fearlessness), and Candor (truthfulness). In both of the books, all of the different groups serve a purpose, and if one of the groups doesn't exceed to their potential, then the whole group gets hurt. I am very glad I picked this book up and I will continue to read the series.
